Types of Mountain Lion / Cougar Hunts

You wake up at 4 am to fresh snow overnight in the mountains and know it will be a good day. After covering 20 miles on snowmobiles, you locate a big track and turn the hounds loose to hear their music as they roam up the canyon. Maybe the cougar will tree or hole up on a canyon cliff face or even get away after an all-day chase. You might have to posthole through the snow for 2 miles and 2000 feet elevation gain to get to the tom, or you may have a short walk. You never quite know how the chase will end, but you will be in some beautiful country pursuing a remarkable animal.

Mountain lions, also known as cougars, have an extensive range over the western US and parts of Canada and Mexico. They are occasionally harvested on an opportunity basis while hunting other big game, but the primary method of hunting mountain lions is with hounds. If you have never experienced this, it is a unique, action-packed hunt. Finding a fresh track is one of the keys to getting your tom, and on these hunts, you can plan to cover prime lion country with trucks, side-by-sides, ATVs, mules, horses, snowmobiles, or on foot. Fresh snow conditions are ideal, but our outfitters also succeed on dry ground hunts when there is no snow or snow conditions are poor such as crusted-over snow where cougars don’t leave tracks. Once you locate a fresh track, the hounds are released, and the chase begins.

We can do on-call hunts for our hunters with flexible schedules or schedule fixed dates. You can choose your weapon, whether a rifle, bow, crossbow, or muzzleloader, and shots will typically be very close range. Mountain Lion hunts can be physical, but if you have limitations, some areas are easier to access than others, and we can generally get you in a place that will work for you.

Places we offer Quality Mountain Lion Hunts

We hunt in many locations throughout North America, but most of our hunts will occur in Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, and British Columbia. The areas we hunt have good elk and deer numbers and produce some large cats as they have good food sources.

Colorado Mountain Lion / Cougar Hunts and Outfitters

Colorado generally has good snow conditions from late November to mid-February. We also do some dry-ground hunts through the end of March. Our outfitters have been operating in their areas for years and know where to find cats. In addition, Colorado has the largest elk herd of any state in the West and high mule deer numbers. These food sources and good snow conditions most years make Colorado a go-to state for cougars.

New Mexico Cougar / Mountain Lion Outfitters and Hunts

New Mexico has some excellent cougar hunting, and we do those hunts generally from late November through mid-January, when snow conditions are best, and some dry ground hunts through the end of March. We work with several quality outfitters in New Mexico and have options ranging from a guaranteed tom hunt on an “on-call basis” to scheduled hunts anywhere from 5 to 10 days, depending on the outfitter. Success rates are generally very high, and with good elk numbers in most areas, we take some big toms on these hunts each year.

Idaho Mountain Lion / Cougar Hunts and Outfitters

Northern Idaho also produces some great mountain lions; our outfitters are first-class houndsmen. Good elk and deer herds mean good cougar hunting, and we are typically 90+% harvest on these hunts. We occasionally see wolves in this area, and you can harvest one if you are lucky enough to have an opportunity. Comfortable accommodations and beautiful scenery make this a wonderful experience for a great tom.

British Columbia Cougar / Mountain Lion Hunts and Outfitters

British Columbia produces some large cats – we typically target and harvest 150-180 pound cougars on these hunts, which usually occur in December and January. Using primarily 4x4s and snowmobiles, you will cover some beautiful country looking for a big track, and then the chase begins. Often we can hunt bobcats, lynx, and wolves on these trips if time allows.

We are constantly in the field seeking additional great outfitters and world-class trophy mountain lion hunts. So if you are looking for an excellent mountain lion hunt and outfitter, please contact us so we can start putting together the perfect mountain lion hunt for you.
