We love finding those incredible locations throughout North America for world-class trophy Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and putting our hunters in those camps! In most areas, any older age-class Rocky Mountain bighorn ram is a trophy as you will earn yours with some blood, sweat, and tears. However, we can target large 180+ inch Boone and Crockett record book sheep in certain areas. So, whether you draw a coveted western state limited entry tag, want to purchase an auction permit or Governor’s tag, or plan to hunt in Canada with a guaranteed outfitter tag, we can help. Our extensive research and outfitter connections can help you find that trophy Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep you have always wanted.
There are two types of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep in North America. The Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep is the largest-bodied sheep in North America, and older age-class rams will have massive broomed horns. They live throughout the west, in Alberta and British Columbia, and the US states of Arizona, Idaho, Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The California bighorn sheep is smaller in body size than the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and has slightly less massive horns that tend to flare out a bit more. In Canada, they live in British Columbia and the US states of Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Both species are huntable across their ranges.
The reality of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep hunting is that unless you can draw a coveted tag in the western US, you will have to purchase special permits available in some states or a premium tag in Canada. These are incredible animals to hunt if you are fortunate enough to have a tag in your pocket. Depending on the state or province, hunts will take place in various habitats but plan on some vertical, rugged terrain that will challenge your lungs and legs. They tend to live in more wooded terrain than the other North American sheep, and experienced sheep hunters will likely tell you that they are one of the most difficult sheep species to harvest. However, this will sound like a good time if you are a sheep nut! There is nothing like hearing the echo of two rams fighting across the valley or seeing that massive set of horns skylined from a mile away as a ram emerges from the timber. Hunting these mountain warriors is an incredible experience.
Hunts can vary greatly regarding the best times of year to hunt, accommodations, level of physicality, and methods of hunting. In general, plan on lots and lots of glassing and covering some higher elevation vertical terrain, trying to catch a glimpse of a big warrior ram. We always recommend talking with your consultant about what you want for your sheep hunt. Whether it’s advice on your sheep tag draw strategy for the western US, help to purchase a special permit, or heading to Canada with a guaranteed tag, we can help you.
We offer Rocky mountain bighorn sheep hunts in Canada with guaranteed tags. We also can help you pick a trusted outfitter if you are fortunate enough to draw a coveted limited entry tag in the United States. There are also some over-the-counter tags in Montana. Our outfitters are carefully selected based on the quality and quantity of animals in their areas, recent population trends, and the outfitters’ track record of putting our hunters on good sheep. We are passionate sheep hunters here at Infinity Hunts and understand what it takes to get a big sheep on the ground.
We work with a few hand-picked outfitters in British Columbia and Alberta. British Columbia currently has a full curl regulation, while Alberta has a 4/ 5 curl regulation. These hunts produce 160-180+ inch rams. Plan on lots of glassing in some of the most rugged terrain in North America. We access some areas initially by quad or horse but plan on quite a bit of backpacking and spike camp set-ups. Physical conditioning is a must on these hunts.
Did you draw a coveted tag in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming? Lucky you!!!! We can help recommend outfitters with proven track records in getting hunters on sheep. Did you win a raffle tag, purchase a lottery or Governor’s tag, or need help doing that? We can help. And if you are a bit of a gambler, Montana has five units that offer unlimited over-the-counter sheep tags. The catch is that those units have a quota – usually 1 or 2 sheep – which closes 48 hours after the quota is met. These hunts take place in some beautiful country and have low success rates – around 1% based on the tags sold, but we do have outfitters that regularly take sheep out of these areas. If interested, contact us, and we can go over the details on this one.
