I called Mike Schubach in April 2022, telling him I was looking for a great black bear hunt. After discussing options, I settled on a Spring Bear hunt in Northern Idaho.
Finally, the hunt arrived. On May 14, around 4:30 in the evening, we drove up a mountain to our first baited site. I saw no bears that night but woke up with high expectations on the morning of May 15. We went out at 6 am and started to run the hounds. One of the dogs ran a bear, and by the time we got to it, the dogs had to retreat. One of the dogs was a little banged up, possibly because it was battling the bear, and the bear ended up getting away.
That evening we went out for another hunt over bait in a different location on another mountain and property. I sat there just under four hours until my black bear came into the bait about 100 yards out. I waited for the bear to turn and took the shot with my 300 Blackout. When I got out of my blind, my adrenaline was kicking in because I wasn’t 100% sure if I hit the bear until the guide and I walked down the mountain to see that he was dead on the scene when we got there. He only made it 20-30 yards from the bait spot before piling up.
I had a very enjoyable time out there with the outfitter. They are great people, and they make sure you feel at home while having fun on a great bear hunt.
